What do the fire souls in society mean?

"One can make a contribution for a shorter or longer time in an association that engages in things one thinks are important, but one agrees to contribute with one's time and what one can for a period."

According to SCB, the value of voluntary contributions in society amounted to 131 billion kronor in 2014. This corresponds to 3.32 % of GDP.

The voluntary contributions are of course not only about enthusiasts, people with a burning interest and commitment to something. Many are those who help a little when they have the time or energy, in an association or organization of some kind. But together we make a phenomenal contribution for the common good of the country.

I previously had a neighbor named Arne Adolfsson. He was an entrepreneur, inventor, and enthusiast, a fine person and enterprising businessman. In 2006, we collaborated in an association called Svensköps Företagarförening. The local entrepreneurs were members, and we tried to organize activities that promoted the Svensköp area in various ways. When it became relevant to appoint a new chairman, Arne asked me if I could consider taking on the role. I was a bit hesitant and realized that it was a rather demanding, voluntary contribution.

– Those who have knowledge and skills that benefit society and our common good are obliged to step up and help in association life, Arne explained.
I still think about his words from time to time. One can make a contribution for a shorter or longer time in an association that engages in things one thinks are important, but one agrees to contribute with one's time and what one can for a period.

Thank you, Arne, you contributed with such a good example. And I accepted the chairman job in 2006. Those were fun and stimulating years.
