Historical Image Bank
– historical image archive with a focus on images
from northwestern Skåne
The project aims to preserve stories in visual form that would otherwise very likely have been lost.
”From hidden negatives to shared memory – an image bank for the entire community”
About the project
Historical Image Bank – a living visual heritage for the future
Historical Image Bank wants to make the extensive photo collections at Historical Image Agency in Ljungbyhed freely available to the public. The collections consist mainly of negative archives from professional photographers and image agencies, featuring subjects ranging from everyday life and news events to sports, documentation, and classic studio portraits – all in very high quality.
But the project is not just about preserving and making these images accessible. We also want to engage more local actors. Associations in the region that have their own historical image archives should be able to become part of the initiative and receive support in digitizing and publishing their material under the Historical Image Bank's shared platform.
The support we seek will be used both for the practical work – to sort, digitize, and future-proof the image archives – and to create and nurture collaborations with associations throughout Skåne.

About the project
The image collections within the Historical Image Bank provide users with the opportunity to access and experience concrete local history in visual form and also contribute facts and stories about the images' everyday life, events, and people. Between participating associations and organizations, additional benefits arise. Here, contacts are created, via the website and the shared digital image archive, at several levels that would not have occurred otherwise. Concrete knowledge about how photographic archives should be managed and used will be disseminated within the project and give forgotten image collections better chances of survival.
