About the project
The pre-study seeks funding to establish a network of actors within small-scale coastal fishing along the entire Swedish coast. Contacts also exist with coastal fishing organizations and researchers in Denmark, Finland, and Norway, who will meet for experience exchange and dialogue about future collaborations.
Towards a cross-regional project
The network will form the foundation for a larger project aimed at strengthening the conditions for the survival, development, and role of coastal fishing in Sweden's food supply and crisis preparedness.
A united voice for coastal fishing
The network will systematically address issues that benefit small-scale coastal fishing while also safeguarding its history and future. By gathering a national – and preferably Nordic – voice, the significance of coastal fishing can be highlighted more effectively to politicians, authorities, and the public.
The significance of coastal fishing in focus
The pre-study will also highlight the historical significance of coastal fishing for the development of many coastal communities, thereby increasing understanding of its role in future societal development. The possibilities to increase the consumption of coastal-caught fish will also be explored, as well as the fishing's function in Sweden's food supply and crisis preparedness.

About the project
Small-scale, coastal fishing is essential for a vibrant countryside along Sweden's coast, according to the project owner. The small-scale fishing – which has been vital for a growing population for thousands of years – is threatened today. Partly by industrial overfishing, partly by legislation aimed at banning all fishing with fixed gear in coastal waters. Additionally, the significantly increased populations of seals and cormorants pose a serious threat to fish stocks in our seas.
