Pre-study: Producer gas for reduced vulnerability

About the project

Today we are dependent on society delivering electricity, which is a prerequisite for example for the heating systems in our homes to function. This also applies to households and properties that use solar panels. The project Wood gas for reduced vulnerability aims to create more knowledge about how to size and build energy systems that enable a home or property to be supplied with both heating and electricity – regardless of weather conditions.

The project wants to show that it is possible to create an energy system that can power a property even without being dependent on the larger electricity grid – a so-called ”island operation.” This means that the property is always self-sufficient with the most important resources, even if society's electricity supply does not function as it should.

How?

The project's goal is to reduce vulnerability for households and businesses regarding access to energy.

They want to develop concrete examples of different systems in varying sizes that can be built with simple (and also used) components. These systems use only local biomass, which reduces resource use and climate impact. These systems are designed to function in everyday life, while also providing extra security by being less vulnerable.

The solution is based on gasification of biomass, such as wood, chips, pellets, or other residual products. Through an engine and generator, electricity is created, and in this way, the property achieves self-sufficiency for both heating and electricity consumption.
