Harmful substances in old houses

Old houses have much to offer – solid materials, beautiful details, and a sense of history that is hard to recreate in newly built homes. But there is also a downside. In this digital lecture, you will learn about common harmful substances in old houses, how to identify them, and remediate them.

Old houses have much to offer with solid materials, beautiful details, and a history that is hard to recreate in newly built homes. But there is also a downside. In many old buildings, materials have been used that are now known to contain harmful substances.

In this digital lecture, you will receive an overview of which substances may be embedded in older houses, why they are harmful, and how you can handle them in a safe and responsible manner – both as a home buyer and as a homeowner.

During the lecture, we will cover:

  • Common environmentally and health-hazardous substances in building materials

  • Where in the house these substances may be found and how you can identify them

  • The risks during renovation, demolition, and reconstruction

  • Management during renovation, demolition, and reconstruction

  • What you as a buyer should consider before purchasing a house
